Checkered CAL Week One

Let’s Get This Thing Started!

Welcome and thanks for joining along in this Checkered Crochet-A-Long! I am SO excited to get started with all of you and can’t wait to see all the checkered cozy that everyone comes up with over the next few weeks!

Here’s how this will work. Each Saturday, over the next four weeks, I’ll post an update with the plan for the week. We’ll break the pattern down into steps to make it easier to get it finished and make sure it doesn’t end up in the “forever-a-WIP” pile! The goal will be to finish all projects and share a photo by October 12th. I’ll put these into a reel and share everyone’s beautiful creations!

**Each week, you’ll have a chance to win a FREE pattern. Share your progress in an Instagram post or story and be sure to tag me. Your name will be entered into a drawing for a FREE pattern of the week. I’ll choose a winner on Fridays!
– Week One: The Large Poltergeist Pillow
– Week Two: The BOO Pillow (releasing Sept 12!)
– Week Three: The Halloween Bitty Bundle One
– Week Four: The Halloween Bitty Bundle Two
– Week Five: Your Choice of Pattern!

Week ONE

We have TWO goals for Week One – “Choose Your Path” and get started!

To “Choose Your Path” check out the schematic linked here. You can choose teeny baby (with modifications), baby, child, or adult (with modification) sizes. You can choose to do a Checkered Cardi or a Checkered Vest and stick to the OG checkers or choose a mod! Read on to find out which yarn you’ll need for each.

You can grab your patterns on Etsy and use the code CHECKEREDCAL to save 25% on ALL checkered wearable patterns and mods. Find the patterns here and click the “wearables” section from the left-side menu to make them easy to find.

Teeny Baby Size:
The teeny baby size is a modification. You’ll need the OG Baby Checkered Cardi or the OG Baby Checkered Vest and any of the baby-sized modification patterns. The teeny baby size needs to be made in DK weight yarn with a small hook size to make it tiny enough for those new-new babies! My DK weight yarn recommendation is Lion Brand Truboo. I love how soft and silky smooth it is!

For Week One, start by checking your gauge swatch. You’ll need to follow these modifications outlined here for the teeny baby size! Once you have met gauge, get started and work on Rows 1-25 this week! If you need help with tapestry crochet, check this tutorial out here.

Baby Size:
To make the baby sizes, you’ll need the OG Baby Checkered Cardi or the OG Baby Checkered Vest and any of the baby-sized modification patterns. The baby size needs to be made in worsted weight yarn with varying hook sizes, depending on intended fit. My worsted weight yarn recommendations include I Love This Yarn, Yarn Bee Soft and Sleek and Yarnspirations Caron Cakes! If you are looking to give your ghost mod a fuzzy look, try out Lion Brand Chenille Appeal or a thin size 5 yarn (ie. Lion Brand Feels Like Bliss or Caron Latte Cakes) might work as well!

For Week One, start by checking your gauge swatch. Once you have met gauge, get started and work on Rows 1-25 this week! If you need help with tapestry crochet, check this tutorial out here.

Child Size:
To make the child sizes, you’ll need the OG Child Checkered Cardi or the OG Child Checkered Vest and any of the child-sized modification patterns. The child size needs to be made in worsted weight yarn with varying hook sizes, depending on intended fit.

Once you have met gauge, get started and work on Rows 1-30 this week! If you need help with tapestry crochet, check this tutorial out here.

Adult Size:
The adult size is a modification pattern and the one that will probably require the most support, depending on size needed. But I’m happy to be that support! You’ll need the OG Child Checkered Cardi or the OG Child Checkered Vest and any of the child-sized modification patterns. You’ll need to follow the modifications outlined here for the adult size! The adult size requires size 5 bulky yarn. You can use double stranded worsted yarn (psst…it might be heavy!) OR I recommend Lion Brand Hue and Me.

For Week One, start by checking your gauge swatch. Once you have met gauge, get started and work on Rows 1-30 this week! If you need help with tapestry crochet, check this tutorial out here.

That’s all for now! Remember, if you have questions, ask away in the IG support group!
