FREE Crochet Basket Pattern: The Bobble Dot Basket

Today, I’m thrilled to share a new free crochet basket pattern, The Bobble Dot Basket. Did you know that March is International Crochet Month? Something new I learned this year! I am participating in the Underground Crafter International Crochet Month Blog Hop this year and designed this free crochet basket pattern as part of the blog hop! We were tasked with designing a new pattern featuring something we love about crochet. So of course, I had to feature BOBBLES in my pattern!
This blog hop has ended. You can also find the ad-free printable pdf available in my Etsy and Ravelry shops. The printable pdf includes both the small and medium size baskets!
If you are like me, there are always little knick-knacks, trinkets and toys covering the house. With four kids, we have a LOT of things! The idea for this design actually came to me when thinking about a convenient way to store Tonies! Both of our youngest kids have Tonies and love playing with the characters. This little basket is a quick and easy project to whip up and store some of those little play toys. The medium size basket also works well as a WIP basket for crochet projects, conveniently keeping everything in one spot!

STITCH ABBREVIATIONS:

SPECIAL STITCHES:
BOBBLE STITCH (bobble): See this stitch tutorial for a step-by-step description with photos.
To make a bobble stitch, work four double crochets into the same stitch as below:
(Yo, insert hook into st, draw up a loop, yo, pull through first two loops on hook) and repeat 3 more times. End with 5 loops on the hook – yo, pull through all 5 loops.
To change color on the bobbles, see this tutorial.
CRAB STITCH: Crab stitch is an sc stitch in reverse. See photos below for tutorial!

INCREASE STITCHES (sc inc/hdc inc):
To increase stitches, you will sc or hdc 2 stitches into the same spot. This allows the shape to become wider. To do this, complete your first stitch (whether it be sc or hdc) as you typically would. Place a second stitch in the same spot, so that you are left with two stitches where previously you had one stitch.
THIRD LOOP:
To work the basket from the circular base of the basket turning up to the sides, you’ll work a round thorugh both the back loop only (BLO) and the third loop. The third loop is created when working hdc stitches. Working through both of these loops allows the work to turn upwards for the sides, while also keeping the base sturdy and attached.
See photos below for help finding the third loop!

Stitch counts are included at the end of each round. Bobble rows include [total # stitches, # bobble stitches].
Round 1: To begin, make a magic circle and place 8 sc stitches around. Do not join.
Continue to work in the round. [8]
*Pro tip: crochet over your magic circle end to avoid weaving later!
Round 2: [sc inc] in each stitch around. [16]
Round 3: [sc, sc inc] x 8. [24]
Round 4: [sc, sc inc, sc] x 8. [32]
Round 5: [hdc inc, hdc x 3] x 8. [40]
Round 6: Working in both the BLO and the third loop, sc x 40 around. [40]
Round 7: sc x 40 around. [40]
Round 8: sc x 2, bobble, [sc x 9, bobble] x 3, sc x 7. [40, 4 bobbles]
Rounds 9-10: sc x 40 around. (2 rounds) [40]
Round 11: sc x 7, bobble, [sc x 9, bobble] x 3, sc x 2. [40, 4 bobbles]
Rounds 12-13: sc x 40 around. (2 rounds) [40]
On the final stitch, sl st to the first st of the round and ch 1.
Round 14: Crab stitch x 40 around the top of the basket. Sl st to the first st. [40]
Cut yarn, tie off and weave in ends. Add cardboard insert, if desired.
