How to Crochet the Bobble Stitch

Crochet Bobble Stitch Tutorial

It isn’t hard to tell from my designs that one of my all-time favorite stitches is the bobble stitch! I love the texture that bobbles add to a design and also how simple color changes can make a whimsical, color-popping product! Another perk to bobbles is the added sensory input they give to make a design more interesting and interactive for kids! This crochet bobble stitch tutorial will give step-by-step instructions for adding this textured stitch to your designs!

Bobbles can be made in many different ways but no matter how they are made, you are basically just lumping multiple double crochet stitches together. Depending on how many double crochet stitches you make, you will have a more or less prominent bobble. You may see it written to make a 2x, 3x, 4x or 5x bobble. These indications simply note the number of double crochet stitches that will be finished together to create the bobble. A 2x bobble will pop off the design less than a 5x bobble.

Bobbles can also be worked in differing methods from the “wrong” side of the work or the “right” side of the work. Many techniques and designs describe how to work the bobble on the “wrong” side of the work – pushing the bobble away from yourself to finish and allow it to pop on the right side of the work. While it doesn’t seem quite as common, you can also work the bobble on the “right” side of the work and push the bobble towards yourself to pop the bobble on the right side of the work. This is helpful when working in the round because you want your bobbles to end up on the outside (right side) of the work and not on the inside (wrong side) of the work! All of my designs, including the bobble buddies, bitty buddies, Georgie blanket and more recommend working the bobble on the right side of the work. If you aren’t sure how to do this or you’ve had trouble with the bobble stitch in the past, read on to view a step-by-step tutorial for working a 4x bobble. These photos are related to the Bitty Bobbled Mitten pattern which uses textured bobble stitch all over the outside of the mittens. The technique can be applied to any pattern utilizing the bobble stitch worked on the right side.
