January’s Free CAL: Bitty Owl Buddy

*The January Crochet-A-Long (CAL) has now ended. Thank you so much to all who participated! Stay tuned for our next free CAL starting at the end of February! If you’d like to make sure you don’t miss a free pattern, subscribe to our newsletter here!*

Happy New Year! It has been a slow start to the year in terms of goal-setting over here, but slowly but surely we are getting back into it! We’re kicking off the New Year with another FREE crochet a long (CAL)! You guys loved the bitty turkey Tom crochet-a-long last November, so I am looking forward to adding more CALs to the blog this year. This month, will be the Bitty Owl Buddy – who is the smaller counterpart to my Ollie the Owl Bobble Buddy. Ollie and this bitty debuted in January 2022 and I cannot believe it has been TWO years since the creation of these sweet birds! Read below to find all of the details and materials needed for this month’s CAL!

This CAL will run Thursday January 25th to Sunday January 28th. But, you know I love to give a little extra time (just in case!) so the CAL posts will remain active through Sunday February 4th. This should give ample time for finishing up your little “whoo” buddy! The pattern will be released in three parts – one on Thursday, one on Friday and one on Saturday. If you need the pattern right away or prefer printing the instructions, check out the PDF pattern on sale through the end of the month!

You also have a chance to WIN a copy of the Bitty Owl PDF Pattern! Share a picture of your finished owl on either Instagram or Facebook and you will be entered to win a copy of the pattern. Make sure to tag @_stuckonyoucrochet_ on Instagram or Stuck on You Crochet on Facebook so that I am able to see your entry! Pictures must be submitted by Sunday February 4th and winner will be chosen on Monday.

On to the details!

Bitty Owl is a bitty buddy pattern designed by me. As a reminder or if you are new here, bitty buddies are a tiny-sized version of my bobble buddy patterns, which are a cross between a blanket and favorite stuffed animal. The bitties are teeny and sweet and make great rattles or teether toys. The bobbled texture and soft body structure provide great sensory input while the cute animal designs make them fun for play! If you want to get your hands on a PDF copy of bitty owl, or any other buddies, you can find the pattern listed on Etsy or Ravelry!

This bitty owl can be made in a few different ways. Typically, bitty buddies are made in size 4 cotton yarn but with the popularity of plush yarn, I’ve started making “chunky” buddies by using Premier Parfait Chunky. While I have only made the owl in cotton yarn, the pattern is similar to Turkey Tom who worked up nicely in plush yarn. Made in size 4 cotton yarn, this owl measures ~7.5 inches from top to bottom. In Premier Parfait Chunky, the owl will likely measures ~10 inches. You are able to use the exact same pattern for either size!

MATERIALS:

Materials needed for this sweet friend will vary based on the type of yarn you choose. If you choose a size 4 yarn, you will need smaller hooks and slightly less yardage of yarn whereas if you use a size 5 or 6 yarn, you will need larger hooks and slightly more yardage of yarn. A quick note about bulkier yarns – these patterns can work well with size 5 bulky yarn or with size 6 Parfait Chunky, but it is a very thin “size 6” yarn. I do not recommend using this pattern with Bernat Blanket Yarn as I feel that it just comes out far too bulky! I think a size 5 yarn works best if you want to make the chunky version.
