How to Crochet the Waffle Stitch
If you are looking to add some squishy, thick texture to your crochet design, the waffle stitch is the stitch for you! This stitch is made up of a combination of front post double crochet stitches and regular double crochet stitches creating a design that mimics a…you guessed it – waffle! It truly does look just like a waffle across the front.
This stitch is a bit of a yarn eater, but the result is worth it! It also likes to cinch, so be sure to keep tension loose or size up in hook size. Blocking when you complete your project will help straighten everything out as well!
This stitch is used in Block Five of The Stitchwork Scarf. Learn each of the stitches included in this whimsical scarf design by checking out the stitch-a-long HERE!

As described above, the waffle stitch creates a grid-like texture across the work. This stitch pattern uses a combination of alternating front post double crochet (FPdc) and double crochet stitches to create this texture. With a front post stitch, you work around the post of the stitch in the prior row rather than into the top loops of the stitch. See these steps below to learn a front post double crochet stitch:
FPdc: yarn over and insert the hook from the front to the back around the post of the stitch in the prior row. yo and draw up a loop. yo and pull through two loops. yo and pull through the remaining two loops to complete this stitch.

Across the front of the work (with the right side facing up), work repeats of one FPdc followed by two dc stitches. On the back of the work (with the wrong side facing up), then work repeats of two FPdcs followed by one dc stitch. This creates the grid-like pattern.
