This checkered placemat can be made with any double-stranded size 4 worsted weight yarn OR single-stranded bulky weight yarn. I used Big Twist, Orchid and Hobby Lobby, I Love This Yarn for mine! You could also consider using cotton yarn, which works up nicely and is easy to wash.

MATERIALS:

HOOK(S): [My all-time favorite hooks are Clover Amour hooks]

YARN:Ā

  • Weight : Double Worsted // 2 colors, <1 skein of each
    • Hobby Lobby, I Love This Yarn, Menthe
    • Big Twist, Orchid

NOTIONS:

OK, Let’s Get Started!

STITCH ABBREVIATIONS:
SPECIAL STITCHES:

CRAB STITCH:
Crab stitch is used on the final edging and is simply a single crochet stitch in reverse. You will naturally yarn under and then yarn over with this stitch. Check outĀ thisĀ tutorial!

TAPESTRY CROCHET:
These coasters use the tapestry crochet technique so you will need to change colors throughout your work. I recommend carrying your alternate color yarn as you work. When changing colors at the end of a row, I recommend switching colors before the ch 1 and turn. I use the yarn over (yo) method while crocheting the coasters but I use yarn under (yu) for the color changes. If you need help with this technique, check outĀ thisĀ tutorial!Ā

PATTERN:

A 6.0 mm hook is recommended. Use a different size as desired, though it may change the final size of the placemat. Use double-stranded worsted or single-stranded bulky yarn for a similarly sized placemat. Stitch counts are included at the end of each row. Ch 1 and turn at the end of each row.

For written instructions, color switches are indicated byĀ Color A,Ā Color B.
Row 1:Ā To begin,Ā ch 43. Make sure to keep tension loose for the chain! Starting in the second ch from hook,Ā [hdc x 6, hdc x 6] x 3,Ā hdc x 6.Ā Ch 1Ā and turn. [42]
Rows 2-5: [hdc x 6,Ā hdc x 6] x 3,Ā hdc x 6.Ā Ch 1Ā and turn. At the end of row 5,Ā ch 1Ā and turn. [42]
Rows 6-10: [hdc x 6,Ā hdc x 6] x 3,Ā hdc x 6.Ā Ch 1Ā and turn. At the end of row 10,Ā ch 1Ā and turn. [42]
Rows 11-15: [hdc x 6,Ā hdc x 6] x 3,Ā hdc x 6.Ā Ch 1Ā and turn. At the end of row 15,Ā ch 1Ā and turn. [42]
Rows 16-20: Repeat rows 6-10. At the end of row 20,Ā ch 1Ā and turn. [42]
Rows 21-25: Repeat rows 11-15. At the end of row 25,Ā ch 1Ā and work the edging. [42]

EDGING:
Working down the left side, sc x 25. Place 2 sc in the corner.
Work sc x 40 across the bottom. Place 2 sc in the corner.
Work sc x 25 up the right side. Place 2 sc in the corner.
Work sc x 40 across the top. Place 2 sc in the final corner.
Sl st to the first st and ch 1.

Now, working the opposite direction, work the crab stitch in each stitch around the edge of the placemat. SeeĀ thisĀ tutorial for extra help! Once you work around all sides of the placemat, cut yarn and pull through the final stitch. Weave yarn end for a seamless finish.
