These scalloped coasters can be made with any size 4 worsted weight yarn, but I prefer cotton as it is absorbent and sturdy! Some of my favorite cotton yarns are Hobby Lobby, I Love This Cotton yarn, Hobbii Friends Cotton, WeCrochet yarn, Comfy and Dishie or Lion Brand, 24/7 cotton. Cotton yarn works up nicely and is easy to wash! If you aren’t a cotton fan, you can easily make these with an acrylic blend as well!

MATERIALS:

HOOK(S): [My all-time favorite hooks are Clover Amour hooks]
*If you’d like a slightly larger diameter for your coaster, use a larger hook size!

YARN:
*Cotton is recommended for coasters as it absorbs liquid well but other acrylic yarns would also work.

NOTIONS:

FINAL SIZE
Diameter: ~

OK, Let’s Get Started!

STITCH ABBREVIATIONS:

SPECIAL STITCHES:

INCREASE STITCHES (inc):

To increase stitches, place two stitches into the same spot to increase the total stitch count and allow the shape to become wider.  To do this, complete your first stitch as you typically would. Place a second stitch incthe same spot, so that you are left with two stitches where previously you had one stitch.

INVISIBLE FASTEN OFF:

The invisible fasten off technique creates a mock stitch, rather than a slip stitch and tie off, to finish your work and prevent unsightly knots at the ends. To see a step-by-step written and photo tutorial, see this link:

MAGIC CIRCLE (MC):

The magic circle is a technique used to begin amigurumi projects. It allows projects to be worked in the round. With your yarn, make a loop. Insert your hook through the loop, yarn over with the working strand and pull through the loop. Yarn over with the working yarn and ch 1. Now work the specified number of stitches into the magic circle. Once finished, pull tightly on the shorter strand hanging in the center of the magic circle to close.

PATTERN:

A 4.0 mm hook is recommended. Use a different size as desired, though it may change the final size of
the coaster. Stitch counts are included at the end of each row. This pattern is worked in the round.

Round 1: To begin, make a magic circle. Work 8 sc sts into the MC. Do not join. Continue working in the round. [8]
Round 2: [sc inc] x 8 around. [16]
Round 3: [sc inc, sc] x 8 around. [24]
Round 4: [sc, sc inc, sc] x 8 around. [32]
Round 5: [sc inc, sc x 3] x 8 around. [40]
Round 6: [sc x 2, sc inc, sc x 2] x 8 around. [48]

Now, begin working the scalloped edges of the coaster. Continue to work in the main color.

Round 7: [sl st, sk st, sc, (hdc, dc), (dc x 2), (dc, hdc), sc, sk st] x 6.
*sl sts in this round DO count towards the total st count for the round.
On the final st, cut yarn and use the invisible fasten off to tie off.

EDGING:

Once you’ve finished, you can use a blocking board and/or stiffening spray (linked above) to help shape your coasters . Also, consider adding self-adhesive cork board to the back of each coaster to help stiffen the finished product and add to the durability. I recommend stacking at least two of the cork boards linked above to give a sturdy finish to your coasters.

I hope you enjoyed this free coaster crochet pattern! If you make these coasters, I’d love for you to share with me. Special thanks to the testers I had for this project – check out their work below for some inspiration!
