How to Crochet the Crab Stitch

I’ve been on quite a blanket kick in the last year and figuring how options for borders and edging has been a fun endeavor! I’ve learned new techniques and tried new stitch combinations to give each design a unique look. One of my favorite ways to finish off my recent projects has been using the crab stitch!

If you aren’t familiar with this stitch, it is simply a single crochet stitch in reverse. It seems a bit intimidating at first, but once you get the hang of it, it is easy to add to your edging and gives a nice, polished look! I love that it gives almost a corded edge with a little bit of bulk to the edge of my designs.

I’ve used this stitch recently in quite a few designs! Check them out below:

The Checkered Cherry Tote is sure to put a spring in your step this summer season! The crab stitch is used in this pattern to join the two panels together. The crab stitch edge gives the tote a sturdy finish! Find the pattern here.

The Bobble Dot Basket is a FREE pattern that uses the crab stitch for the edging of the basket. It gives a nice, corded texture to the finished edge of the basket. Find the free pattern for the small basket size here. Or check out the bundle with the medium sized basket here!

The OG Flora Blanket (found here) featured a scalloped edging but in last year’s crochet-a-long feature, I used the crab stitch for the edging of my oversized Flora Blanket. I envisioned a floral picnic blanket and wanted a nice, thick edge for the blanket! Find the FREE crochet-a-long here!

There are a few other designs that I’ve also used the crab stitch but we’ll leave it at those few examples. Safe to say, I love this stitch! Check out this photo tutorial below for a visual of the crab stitch. I hope this helps!
