The Flora Blanket Crochet-A-Long: FAQs

The Flora Blanket Crochet-A-Long kicks off on August 23rd and we can’t wait to get started!

This crochet-a-long will run for six weeks from August 23rd through October 4th. Instructions will be released weekly, on Fridays.

Here are some quick answers to a few frequently asked questions:

  1. What is a crochet-a-long?
    • A crochet-a-long, or CAL abbreviated, is an event for makers to work on a pattern at the same time. Events are typically held virtually and involve a new or existing pattern which is broken up into parts. The parts are released on a schedule and participants can work through each part as it is released.
  2. Why are you hosting this one?
    • Because it is fun! Crochet-a-longs offer an opportunity to meet other artists within the community. While working on the same project, we can share ideas and support with each other! For the Flora Blanket Crochet-A-Long, you will have the opportunity to engage on Facebook through pinned posts or Instagram through the chat group!
  3. What do I need to do to get started?
    • Check out this post for a brief overview and materials list for the project. If you’d like to sign up for the Flora Blanket crochet-a-long engagement groups, you can follow along on Facebook here or join the Instagram chat group here!
  4. Do I have to make the same blanket size?
    • No! You can adjust your blanket to any size you like. The Flora Blanket is a granny-square project, so you can make as many or as few squares as you would like! Instructions will be provided throughout the crochet-a-long on how to adjust for different sizing.
  5. Do I have to purchase the pattern?
    • No, you don’t! While some crochet-a-longs do run with a purchased pattern, this one is being provided entirely free! Please note that there ARE some differences between the crochet-a-long instruction that will be shared and the original blanket. The original blanket has a thicker joining band between the squares and two different edging options. If you prefer to make this blanket during the CAL, you can use the code FLORACAL here to save!
  6. How do I plan out color choices and where each square should go?
    • If you want to make the exact same blanket pictured for the CAL, I will give specific instructions on how many flowers/squares to make of each color and how to lay them out. The blanket uses a main color, border color, center color and seven rainbow colors as detailed in this post. If you want to use different colors or would like a different layout, use the Flora Planning Page below to create a sample of just what you are envisioning! This planning page has a blanket of 9 squares by 11 squares but you can color as many or as few as you would like!
  7. Will the pattern remain available after the crochet-a-long?
    • Yes! In the past, CAL patterns have only been available for the specific length of the CAL. However, for this project I will be leaving the instructions up on the website. So, if you aren’t able to finish in the CAL timeframe or would like to come back to make another blanket at a different time, you’re in luck! All I ask is that you please come back to the website to get the pattern, rather than taking screenshots as this helps support my business and free designs 🙂
  8. Do you have other free patterns?
    • I do! In the past, I have run shorter free crochet-a-longs but I am experimenting with offering a longer, more engaged one this time around! I also offer free patterns on my website and am always working to add more to the site 🙂 You can find crochet-a-longs here and free patterns here.
