Ok guys, you have loved the monthly bitty buddy crochet-a-longs (CALs) and I have loved seeing the projects and interacting with the people who join along. BUT….I want more! I love the crochet community and the support and creativity that comes from within. There are SO many inspiring projects and patterns and ideas. But sometimes, the scrolling gets in the way of my actually completing a project…especially when it comes to large ones like a giant blanket! So, I am switching up the way CALs will be run and hoping to really create a great sense of community and encouragement in mastering some of these projects.

So, what does that mean? Well, I’m choosing a LARGE blanket for this fall’s crochet-a-long and hoping to get a community of people who will all join in and create a cozy, statement blanket piece together! Want to see the projected blanket? Drumroll please……

Ta Da! The Flora Blanket will be this fall’s crochet-a-long piece and it is HUGE! I released the Flora Blanket and few months ago and it has quickly become one of my very favorite projects. It works up in small granny squares which are then joined together and the color customizations are just endless. I wanted to create a beautiful fall blanket full of rainbow colors with a little bit of a checkered pattern. Can you see the checkers? I love how this colorful blanket turned out and I envision snuggling up on crisp evenings all fall long!

The Nitty Gritty (ie. the Details)

Six Weeks. Ninety-Nine Squares. One Awesome Blanket.

Here’s how the free blanket crochet-a-long will work.

The crochet-a-long will begin on Friday, August 23rd. Over a period of six weeks, I’ll release parts of the pattern broken down into small, manageable daily goals so that you can keep up with the blanket. Want to make something bigger or smaller? No problem, just adjust the number of squares! Pattern parts will be released every Friday over the six-week period. We’ll support each other through various social media avenues. You can choose to post in the Facebook group, join the Instagram chat group or join Instagram lives to engage, share your project and encourage others with theirs.

If you don’t have the Flora Blanket pattern, don’t worry – I will be posting the parts of the blanket free on the blog. If you prefer to have a pdf copy of the pattern, you can use the code FLORACAL to save 30%!

Still unsure? You can check out the basic parts of the square pattern here and see if you are up for a larger blanket. Now, if you have the Flora Blanket pattern or you’ve seen the pattern release, you might notice that this blanket looks a little bit different from the original. While the flowers and squares are still the same, the joining stitches and the edging are a little bit different. Since I wanted my blanket to have a checkered effect, I needed the joins between the squares to be a little bit thinner than the original blanket. I also wanted a nice, thick edging for the blanket to make it feel nice and hefty! If you have the original pattern, you can choose to join your squares and add the edging as written in the pattern OR as written for this crochet-a-long.

Materials

So, what exactly do I need to participate!?

Let’s talk about what it will take to make this blanket. I will list everything used and the steps for making this exact blanket during the crochet-a-long. However, if you would like to use different colors or change things up, you absolutely can do that! You can easily change the total number of squares to adjust the final size of the blanket. Just note that if you do plan to make a different blanket size or use a different join/edging, your total yardage will vary from what is listed here!

Here’s a great way to plan out your Flora Blanket if you want to choose your own colors. You’ll need a main color, border color, center color (for the flower centers) and seven accessory colors! Grab the printable page here to get started on your planning!

NOTIONS

Darning Needle
Measuring Tape
Scissors
Stitch Markers (if desired)

Blocking Board
This is not essential but it is very helpful for keeping track of your squares and blocking them so they are similar tension and size. I did not block my full blanket at the end but I did block each square along the way.

GAUGE

Exact gauge is not essential for this project. If you want the project to end up exactly the size pictured, squares should measure about 4.5 in x 4.5 in

FINAL SIZE

Ok…can I share some real life truth? I forgot to measure……! We are on vacation in Florida as I type and in my rush to leave the house, I totally forgot to measure the finished size! It’s big, it’s cozy and it covered my daughter in a snuggly car sleep session during our drive to Florida. While I did bring the blanket with us (because I’m obsessed!), I did not bring a measuring tape with us and so…I’m not sure the final size. I’ll for sure have it listed once we are back home next week! But for now, truth about traveling with four small kiddos will have to do 🙂

Anyways, that’s it for now! I am so excited to share this crochet-a-long with you guys and I hope you enjoy it just as much as I do!
